Nelson Mandela Day

 *International Mandela Day*

*"It is in your hands to make of our world a better one for all.”*

Nelson Mandela

On July 18, 2009, the UN General Assembly unanimously decided to establish Nelson Mandela International Day in honour of Nelson Mandela's birthday. It was motivated by Nelson Mandela's plea, issued a year earlier, for the next generation to assume responsibility for leading efforts to redress global social inequalities, when he declared, "It is in your hands now."

The campaign to honour Madiba's life's work and improve the world is more than just a celebration of his life and legacy.
The Nelson Mandela Foundation and the 46664 performances asked the entire world to participate in their support of an official Mandela Day on April 27, 2009. The purpose of Mandela Day is to honour Nelson Mandela, the former president of South Africa, and his values via volunteerism and community service rather than as a day off from work.

Mandela Day is an International Day of Action that honours the notion that every person has the potential to change the world and have an effect.
The campaign's message for Mandela Day is:

"For 67 years, Nelson Mandela has battled for social justice. Please begin with 67 minutes as per our request."
A statement made on Mandela's behalf read, "We would be honoured if such a day may help to bring people together around the world to fight poverty and promote peace, healing, and cultural variety."

Every year, we commemorate Nelson Mandela International Day to bring attention to his legacy as a man who revolutionised the 20th century and influenced the 21st. Now is the time for everyone to recommit to the principles that motivated Nelson Mandela. absolute certainty. a strong dedication to justice, human rights, and basic freedoms. a strong conviction in the worth and equality of every woman and man. a tenacious effort to promote communication and unity despite differences and divisions. Great statesman Nelson Mandela was a tenacious defender of equality and the architect of peace in South Africa.

Let us keep in mind Nelson Mandela's life lessons and the fundamental humanism that guided him as the world moves forward with the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development and works to overcome new sources of adversity: "For to be free is not merely to cast off one's chains, but to live in a way that respects and enhances the freedom of others."
