Kargil Vijay Diwas

*KARGIL VIJAY DIWAS*

Every year on July 26, India celebrates Kargil Vijay Diwas to commemorate its victory over Pakistan in the Kargil conflict of 1999. The bravery of our country's jawans was on display during the high-altitude conflict, and every year, Kargil Vijay Diwas is held to remember their sacrifice. The Kargil War began with Pakistani soldiers taking up positions in the Northern Kargil District in Ladakh in 1999. It goes without saying that the Indian Army was determined to regain control of the seized area, and history attests to the fact that they succeeded.
The Kargil Vijay Diwas is traditionally observed throughout the country. The Indian Prime Minister is renowned for annually honouring the martyrs at Amar Jawan Jyoti at the India Gate. Along the foothills of Tololing Hill near Dras, there is a memorial to the Kargil War as well. The Indian Army constructed it as a memorial to the men who died fighting. The names of the martyrs are also etched on the Memorial Wall there, which is an interesting juxtaposition to the poetry "Pushp Kii Abhilasha" that is inscribed on the memorial's gateway.

_THE ORIGIN_

On this day 22 years ago, the Indian Army reclaimed all of the Indian installations in Kargil that the Pakistani army had previously occupied. Since then, July 26 has been recognised as a national holiday to remember the warriors who gave their lives in this conflict.

_THE WAR_

In the Kargil area of Jammu & Kashmir, the conflict lasted from May to July of 1999. General Pervez Musharraf, the head of Pakistan's army at the time, is thought to have engineered the battle without telling Nawaz Sharif, the country's prime minister at the time.

_DOUBLE CHARM_

Terrorists and regular Pakistani soldiers entered Indian territory to start it off. During the early stages of the fight, the infiltrators took up positions in vital areas that provided them with a tactical advantage. The Indian Army was able to identify the points of invasion and start "Operation Vijay" thanks to intelligence provided by neighbourhood shepherds.

_WAR BY OTHER MEANS_

The Pakistan Army's involvement in the infiltrations was demonstrated by the revelation by India of intercepted communications between senior Pakistani military officials. Nawaz Sharif, the prime minister of Pakistan, came to Washington to request assistance from the US. Bill Clinton, the president of the United States at the time, refused to do so until Pakistani forces left the Line of Control.

_COST OF THE WAR_

The cost of the victory was high. The official death toll on the Indian side was 527, whereas there were between 357 and 453 fatalities on the Pakistani side.
