Independence day

*Independence Day*

On Monday, August 15, India will commemorate the 76th anniversary of its independence from British dominion. On August 15, 1947, India declared its independence from British colonial domination. The war for freedom was a protracted and exhausting one, marked by the sacrifices of many freedom fighters who gave their lives in defence of their nation and fellow citizens. This day honours the nation's accomplishments as a whole, our country's history, culture, and freedom warriors. It also serves as a reminder to all Indian citizens of the start of a new era marked by freedom from more than 200 years of British rule.

_History_

Under the direction of Mohandas Karamchand Gandhi, the Indian Independence movement got underway during World War I. On July 4, 1947, the Indian Independence Bill was introduced in the British House of Commons and was later approved. On August 15, 1947, it signalled the end of more than 200 years of British rule. Mahatma Gandhi, Jawaharlal Nehru, Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel, Bhagat Singh, Chandra Shekhar Azad, Subhas Chandra Bose, and numerous other leaders were significant figures in the Indian freedom struggle.
It was on 15th August 1947 that India was declared independent from British colonialism, and the reins of control were handed over to the leaders of the Country. India's gaining of independence was a tryst with destiny, as the struggle for freedom was a long and tiresome one, witnessing the sacrifices of many freedom fighters, who laid down their lives on the line. On August 15, 1947, India's first prime minister, Jawaharlal Nehru, raised the Indian flag above the Lahori Gate of the Red Fort in Delhi. Since, it has been customary for the current prime minister to hoist the flag and address the nation.

_Celebration_

India celebrates Independence Day with drills, flag-raising rituals, and the singing of the national hymn. Additionally, the state capitals offer a variety of cultural programmes. A parade of personnel of the military forces and police follows the prime minister's participation in the flag-raising ceremony at Old Delhi's Red Fort historical site. The prime minister then makes a televised speech to the nation, describing upcoming challenges and aspirations while recalling India's great victories from the previous year. With kites of all sizes, shapes, and colours adorning the sky, kite flying has also grown to be considered a tradition during Independence Day. Additionally, even though they are closed for the festival, New Delhi's government buildings keep their lights on to honour the occasion.
The entire country of India observes Independence Day as a national holiday as a reflection of the great sacrifices made by freedom fighters to secure our freedom and independence from British control.

In India, 15 August is celebrated as Independence Day every year. This year, the nation will be celebrating its 76th Independence Day, marking 75 years of the country's independence from British rule. A special event called 'Azadi Ka Amrit Mahotsav' will be organised by the Indian government to pay tribute to the freedom fighters. The programmes at the event will also honour the history, culture, and achievements of the nation as a whole.
